Arsenal of Guns Found in Hotel Hours Before New Year Celebrations

Houston police and security went to his room to collect his belongings, where they found ammunition all over the room, local NBC affiliate KPRC reported. The officer called for backup to arrest the suspect.

HOUSTON-An intoxicated man was taken into custody at a Houston hotel ahead of New Year's Eve festivities Sunday, police said.

Police spokesman Victor Senties says the man later told investigators he'd brought the guns into his room from his truck because he didn't want them to get stolen.

The man, who has not been identified, was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing.

Investigators said hotel security officers called police after the man became belligerent and refused to be leave the bar at downtown Houston's Hyatt Regency Hotel early Sunday morning. They're going to check his vehicle to see if there's more weapons in it.

"Officers on the scene located multiple firearms", the officer said.

According to the Hyatt's website, the hotel is preparing its own New Year's Eve celebration at the hotel with a 50,000 balloon drop at the stroke of midnight. His name hasn't been released.

Police are waiting to interview the man until he has sobered up, Macintosh said.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed via Twitter on December 31 that the situation is contained and that there are "no specific threats" to Houston.
