Florida State refutes report that team isn't bowl eligible

While FBS teams are usually able to count one win against FCS competition towards bowl eligibility, the report reveals that Delaware State did not meet FCS scholarship requirements in order to be counted as a win towards bowl eligibility.

A Reddit user who reported the story contacted Delaware State, and the data provided showed the football team had received 87 percent of the limit.

Florida State secured a bowl bid for a 36th consecutive season - what the school boasts as an ongoing national record - thanks to three straight wins to close out its schedule, concluding with a rescheduled game against Louisiana-Monroe on December 2.

In a wild turn of events, the Seminoles are apparently not bowl eligible because their win over FCS Delaware State should not have counted toward their six wins, according to specifications in NCAA bylaws.

Florida State, however, corrected the Reddit report, saying it overlooked the fact that academic aid can be counted toward that 90 percent threshold.

According to Reddit user bakonydraco, Florida State's win over FCS school Delaware State in November shouldn't count towards FSU's bowl eligibility. "These media reports represent incomplete information, as they only reflect athletics scholarships received".

The Seminoles are not actually bowl-eligible, but they're still playing in one.

"This monumental error should have been caught at three levels: the school, conference and NCAA", a bowl industry source said. "If it was amusing, it would be a comedy of errors". The Seminoles began the season ranked in the top 5, but quarterback Deondre Francois sustained a season-ending injury against Alabama in their opener.

Florida State could have applied for a waiver through the NCAA's bowl eligibility process had the issue been discovered sooner. After beating Delaware State, Florida and ULM consecutively, the Noles received a bid to the Independence Bowl at 6-6.
