Turkey condemns attack on Somali police academy

At least three police officers were killed in a suicide blast at a police academy in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, officials said.

The bomber, with explosives strapped around his waist and torso, infiltrated Gen. Kahiye Police Academy and targeted officers rehearsing for Somalia's Police Day celebrations scheduled for December 20, Capt. Mohamed Hussein said.

The bomber, with explosives strapped around his waist and torso, infiltrated General Kahiye Police Academy and targeted officers gathering for morning exercises, police spokesman Major Mohamed Hussein said.

The group, which is allied to al-Qaeda, is battling the UN-backed government in Somalia.

The group said they killed more than 25 police officers in the attack.

"He detonated his bomb vest having realized that his presence had drawn suspicion among officers in the queue", he said. "He wanted to do something for his country, but today we are burying him", Abdifatah Ahmed said. The group regularly carries out bombings in Mogadishu and other towns.

In October, al-Shabab fighters stormed a hotel in the capital killing at least 20 people.

The airstrike was carried out early Tuesday morning about 65 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Somalia's capital, the USA statement said, adding that no civilians were killed. Only a few attacks since the ones on September 11, 2001 have killed as many people, according to the Global Terrorism Database at the University of Maryland.

A U.S. military drone strike on a vehicle carrying explosives in Somalia has removed "an imminent threat to the people of Mogadishu" by the al-Shabab extremist group, the U.S. Africa Command said Tuesday.

The 22,000-strong AU force is scheduled to leave by 2020 and some security experts say al Shabaab could find it easier to stage attacks as the peacekeeping forces are reduced because Government forces will find it hard to replicate their work.
