Is the Diego Maradona statue worse than Ronaldo's?

Argentine footballer Diego Maradona (L) gestures during a football workshop with school students in Barasat.

Critics on Twitter had plenty to say about Maradona's new statue.

While his supporters had lined the streets to welcome the 1986 World Cup victor during his first visit to Kolkata in 2008, his postponed visit in December 2017 saw few supporters welcoming him at the airport. He is too good a player.

"It's just unbelievable. I have loved coming to Kolkata and I am very happy to be here again", Maradona said.

Football icon Diego Maradona has been immortalised in bronze - but many can barely recognise him.

Maradona was seen engaging with the Aditya School of Sports students - all wearing the famous No 10 of the great - actively passing the ball around to them and giving them penalty practice.

His second visit in nine years may have been a low-key one unlike in 2008, but the legend still charmed about a thousand-odd crowd at a charity event in a north Kolkata club this afternoon. The anticipated match between Ganguly and Maradona is likely to take place on December 12 though Maradona is not expected to play the entire match due to shoulder surgery he had a few days ago.

But the end result is a troubling depiction of his 1986 World Cup triumph that looks little like the man himself.
