Baker Mayfield becomes first senior to win Heisman in 11 years

Baker Mayfield, the dynamic quarterback out of Oklahoma, Lamar Jackson, Louisville's Heisman winning quarterback from past year, and Stanford running back Bryce Love.

For Baker Mayfield, the third time was the charm.

The brash, flag-planting Sooners star won a lopsided vote to become the sixth Oklahoma player to the win Heisman. Oklahoma cruised to a Big 12 title thanks in large part to the quarterback's heroics, as Mayfield threw for 4,340 yards with 41 touchdowns and only five interceptions through 13 games.

When the dust settled, Mayfield walked away with the Heisman, with Love finishing second and Jackson finishing third. He also has 310 yards and five touchdowns as a runner. Along with the Heisman, Mayfield also won the Walter Camp, Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Awards.

The quarterback was arrested in February and pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors, including public intoxication.

Mayfield, who finished third in the Heisman voting a year ago, leads the nation in completion percentage (.710), yards per pass attempt (11.8), yards per completion (16.6) and pass of plays of 20-plus yards (75).

"Coach [Lincoln] Riley you have been a mentor to me", he said.

Mayfield still has some unfinished business to attend to this season. The Sooners will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup January 1. He finished fourth in the Heisman balloting in 2015 and third a year ago.

In other years, that may have been reason enough to not vote for Mayfield if the other candidates were even in the same stratosphere as him, but they're not, and that's why he may set a record for margin of victory when the Heisman is announced.
