Whistleblower To Dems: Flynn Promised Biz Associate He'd Gut Russia Sanctions

"Donald Trump was just 11 minutes into his presidency when his choice for national security adviser, Michael Flynn, texted a former business partner to say an ambitious us collaboration with Russian Federation to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East was 'good to go, ' according to a new whistleblower account", NBC News reports.

The business colleague who texted with Flynn later recounted that he also suggested sanctions against Russian Federation would be "ripped up" as one of the administration's first acts, according to the whistleblower.

The congressman, Rep. Elijah Cummings, outlined the whistleblower's allegations in a letter to House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. Trey Gowdy earlier this week.

Copson, according to the whistleblower, said Obama's sanctions had "f**ked everything up in my nuclear deal with the sanctions".

In June, Newsweek revealed that while he was an adviser to Trump, Flynn had done work for a consortium led by Copson and former senior USA military officials to build nuclear power plants in the Middle East in a partnership with a Russian state-owned energy contractor.

On Inauguration Day, according to the letter, the whistleblower met with an individual who was working with Flynn to promote a project with Russia, Alex Copson, who told the whistleblower that Flynn would ensure the sanctions would be removed, paving the way for the project to continue.

The whistle-blower's account is detailed in a letter from Rep. Upon learning about this agreement, White House attorneys and private counsel who represent both past and current Trump aides told Politico that they called up their clients and asked if they thought there were any incriminating recordings circulating out there. "I couldn't be better". The whistleblower alleged Copson showed off the text to those around him, calling it "the best day of my life". "I am going to celebrate today".

Flynn had texted Copson with the same message - that the nuclear reaction project was "good to go" - from his place on the dais outside the Capitol 10 minutes into Trump's inaugural address, the whistleblower told Cummings.

Mr. Flynn believed that ending the sanctions could allow a business project he had once participated in to move forward, according to the whistle-blower. Trump fired Flynn in February, saying he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and others about his contacts with Russia's ambassador to the U.S.

Flynn pled guilty last week to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding conversations with Russians. A document filed in Flynn's case mentioned his failure to comply with foreign lobbying disclosure laws related to his work for Turkey, but his charging document didn't mention that work. Apparently, Flynn and his business partner were looking to expand their financial footprint in the region.

With the clearance of Mueller's office, Cummings writes that he's now making the whistleblower's story public.

Mr. Gowdy and Mr. Cummings have a long history of clashing publicly over politically charged investigations.

President Donald Trump and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Gowdy did not immediately respond to Associated Press requests for comment but previously has referred letters from House Democrats about Flynn to Mueller's inquiry.
