Keisha Lance Bottoms Elected Atlanta's Next Mayor | @KeishaBottoms #BlackGirlMagic

- Atlanta mayoral candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms stopped by Good Day Atlanta Wednesday morning after declaring herself the victor of the runoff.

Acknowledging this history, Norwood said, "I've done this before".

Unofficial returns showed that Bottoms garnered 759 more votes than Norwood in the runoff election on Tuesday - a virtual repeat of the 2009 race when Mayor Kasim Reed defeated Norwood by 714 votes. In a moment that sent chills through Rashad Richey, the Mayor-Elect paused to say that the City of Atlanta owes Richey a debt of gratitude for him raising the consciousness of voters in this election. Norwood calls herself an independent and Bottoms is Reed's chosen successor. She said absentee ballots from military members have yet to figure in the totals and she believes some ballots have yet to be tabulated.

Bottoms declared victory just minutes into early Wednesday morning, going on stage at her campaign party at the same time as her opponent, Mary Norwood, spoke to her supporters. Norwood has since requested a recount, claiming that the margin was too small to call.

A Norwood victory would mean Atlanta - a gentrifying city where the African American share of the population remains a majority but has gone down over the years - would have its first white mayor in more than 40 years.
