Xiaomi's next flagship will use Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip

Microsoft's Terry Myerson joined Asus, HP and Qualcomm executives on stage at the Qualcomm Technology Summit to unveil the first Always on PCs - Windows 10 laptops based on the Qualcomm 835 chipset, with a promised week of battery life. Just that the NovaGo is running a mobile processor does not put the device into isolation. Users can expect to run League of Legends, DOTA 2 and CS:GO at 1920x1080, and Overwatch and Quake Champions at 1280x720, and still get between 43fps and 66fps depending on the quality settings used. These type of PCs, such as the ones from HP and ASUS are running Windows 10 on ARM, and they can deliver all-day battery life, better security, and much more. ARM computers aren't noticeably thinner or lighter than others, and though they lack any sort of fans, many newer Intel computers are fanless, as well.

Rumored for next generation flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and LG G7, Qualcomm today officially announced the Snapdragon 845 processor.

Recently AMD announced it was bringing its new high-performance x86 CPU cores and its latest GPU architecture to the notebook space. The device with 4GB RAM and 64GB SSD will be available for $599, the one with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD for $799.

These devices are deigned to be always on like your phone and Asus says the NovaGo will offer more than 30 days of standby time. The companies announced all-new Windows on ARM PCs, including HP's Envy x2 and ASUS's NovaGo. The Envy has a similarly sized 12-inch display, though its 1,920 x 1,280 resolution isn't as sharp as the MacBook, and to be fair the Envy is more of a tablet convertible while the Macbook is a more traditional laptop. The Snapdragon 835 SoC is complemented by up to 8 GB RAM and up to 256 GB UFS 2.0 storage.

The big unknowns at this point, other than whether or not HP's battery life claims hold up to our own lab tests, is how the Snapdragon chip will stack up performance- and price-wise compared with competing Intel-powered PCs. The Envy x2 will also support an active stylus that is Windows Ink certified for activities such as note-taking and illustration.

Windows 10 on ARM is a reboot of Microsoft's earlier attempts to marry mobile processors with full laptop experiences.
