Bumrah, Parthiv named in 17-member Indian squad for South Africa series

The first Test will start on January 5 in Cape Town, the second Test will be played in Centurion on January 13, and the final Test match of the series will be played in Johannesburg on January 24. The MSK Prasad-led selection panel has persisted with the Test regulars for the 17-member squad, which includes seven batsmen, two wicketkeepers, along with the all-round option of Hardik Pandya.

INDIA TEST SQUAD VS SOUTH AFRICA: Virat Kohli (C), Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah. The four pacers - Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav are automatic picks.

Sri Lanka are probably sick of the sight of Virat Kohli, so confirmation the India captain will be rested for the upcoming Twenty20 matches will come as welcome news for the tourists.

Meanwhile, selectors also named the 15-man squad for Sri Lanka T20Is.

Hardik Pandya is the only genuine all-rounder while Parthiv Patel, after his gutsy show against England past year, booked his tickets for South Africa.

While announcing the squad, BCCI chairman of selectors M.S.K. Prasad said this is the best balanced side for the tour.

"The nature of wickets in South Africa will suit his bowling", said Prasad, elaborating on the Gujarat slinger's selection.

"I really feel unfortunate for Kuldeep Yadav, he would definitely have added variety. But he is a fine bowler and over a period of time, we would see him grow", the former Andhra stumper said.

Yuzvender Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Mohammad Siraj, Basil Thampi and Jaydev Unadkat are included for the three-match T20I series.
