Big 12 Championship Game Predictions: TCU vs. Oklahoma 12/2/17

Baker Mayfield and No. 2 Oklahoma were happy to have another game, even with the potential consequences.

For a league left out of the College Football Playoff twice in the first three years of the system, the timing of its title game return could be less than ideal.

"I've got great players around me", Mayfield said. "The most exciting thing about today was we controlled our own destiny".

"I feel like if we keep working the way that we've been working, everything is going to play out just how we want it to".

Oklahoma's win nearly certainly secures its spot in the College Football Playoff semifinal - which will be revealed on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 11:00 a.m. CT.

They were everywhere, like thousands of tiny trophies signifying the latest stretch of OU's Big 12 dominance and a season that has never looked more promising.

The top play-maker and leader on the defensive side of the ball, Okoronkwo was named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year. But a loss would have likely knocked the Sooners out of contention. "We knew there was going to be a championship game and that was just going to be part of our journey if we wanted to get to this place". In seven of its 10 wins this year TCU has won by at least 20 points, including last week's 45-22 victory over Baylor.

After TCU fumbled away the ball on its first snap of the game, which the Sooners returned for a touchdown, the Horned Frogs clawed their way back through the first half, thanks to a pair of jump-ball touchdown throws to and.

"Big plays, we gave up a couple. There was a Texas Tech pretty well-known quarterback that hit a guy from A&M in the head and they all thought it was amusing, to throw balls and do those kind of things back in those days", Patterson said, never mentioning any names.

Mayfield completed 10 of 14 passes for 100 yards in the first quarter.

Mayfield attempted only 23 passes, throwing four touchdowns and breaking a 54-yard run to all but seal an award that's been long decided thanks to his play over the season's first 12 games.

Rodney Anderson ran for 93 yards on 24 carries, tying his season - and career - high for carries. Big defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo chased him toward the sideline before Parnell Motley delivered the crushing blow that kept TCU's quarterback from getting a first down. Hill finished 27 of 37 for 234 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in his swan song. None of Baker Mayfield's pregame throws found their way to a TCU player's head, and the only thing he grabbed during the game was a 25-pound bronze trophy permanently performing a stiff-arm. Backers of TCU will point out that the Horned Frogs held the Sooners scoreless in the second half of the first meeting between these two teams. TCU managed just 95 total yards over the final 30 minutes and no points.

In recent weeks, Oklahoma's opponents have taken to trying to rattle the Sooners, trying to take them out of their game with a series of tactics both psychological and physical. Their 11th Big 12 title overall was the first without Bob Stoops, the coach for their last national title in 2000 who resigned unexpectedly last summer.
