Selena Gomez gives tearful speech thanking friend who gave her a kidney

"That's it. I got to the point where it was life and death". In her acceptance speech, she paid an emotional tribute to her kidney donor and thanked her for saving her life.

"With my music, I've really been able to illustrate the things I want", Gomez also said during her speech. "I am so grateful for all the older women who have lifted all of us up, because I couldn't be here without all of you", Gomez added.

Billboard honored Selena Gomez with its Woman of the Year distinction at last night's (November 30) Billboard Women in Music Awards, but as far as the "Wolves" singer was concerned, the honor belonged to the friend who saved her life.

The singing sensation had shocked her fanbase back in September when she revealed that, due to complications in her ongoing battle with lupus, she had received an emergency kidney transplant, with Raisa selflessly stepping up for her best friend.

Gomez has been abundantly introspective, which was clear from the accompanying interview she did for the December 9 issue of Billboard.

Selena Gomez has debuted some wonderful new music this year, even while she has battled for her life. "Seeing all these women come up here tonight and say these handsome speeches with their awards is so inspiring", she told the crowd, then paying tribute to those who have helped her get to that point.

After such a huge year, it's no surprise that Selena was awarded Billboard's Woman Of The Year, because, well, she's an unbelievable human being... "It was really hard in the beginning", she admitted. "I've never felt this proud to be a woman in the industry as I am today", she said. "When I found out I was a match for Selena, I didn't think twice about it". I feel incredibly lucky'. "I'm out there fighting for you".
