Geraldo Rivera Apologizes After Bette Midler Groping Allegation Resurfaces

The clip resurfaced in response to a series of tweets he posted defending disgraced Today host Matt Lauer, justifying sexual misconduct in news rooms and throwing in some arbitrary rules for allegations before they can be believed.

"Tomorrow is my birthday", Ms. Midler tweeted Thursday.

In the 26-year-old interview, Midler told Walters, "I did not offer myself up on the altar of Geraldo Rivera".

Fox News host Geraldo Rivera defended ousted Today show anchor Matt Lauer on Wednesday, criticizing the "current epidemic of #SexHarassmentAllegations" and arguing that "news is a flirty business".

The swift, online condemnation also prompted Rivera to issue an apology six hours after his first comments.

"I've deeply regretted its distasteful & disrespectful tone & have refrained from speaking about it - I'm embarrassed & profoundly sorry to those mentioned - I have & again apologize to anyone offended", he said.

Rivera tweeted that Lauer was a "great guy" and women who come forward with sexual harassment stories "may be criminalizing courtship". She says, "He and his producer pushed me into my bathroom, they broke two poppers and pushed them under my nose, and proceeded to grope me". "We were troubled by his comments and are addressing them with him", the cable news network said in a statement Wednesday.

Noted Jezebel: "At the very least, he apologizes for the way he wrote about her in a book, and at the very most he is essentially denying her account of what happened".

Rivera, a former TV host and Fox News correspondent, was defending Lauer, who was sacked from NBC after the reports of inappropriate behaviour became public. Rivera said he didn't sufficiently explain the "horrendous problem" of sexual harassment.

In the interview, Walters and Midler were discussing Rivera's autobiography in which he alleges an affair with Midler. "Bette, I apologize", Rivera tweeted.

Luckily for humanity, one reporter already exposed Geraldo Rivera's untoward behavior (which he called "consensual") toward women in the 1990s - that would be Geraldo Rivera himself.

He then goes on, in the second tweet, to take the Al Franken "I remember it differently" tack that seems to be cropping up in apologizes an bad lot these days.
