Donations to charitable organizations encouraged on 'Giving Tuesday'

There are plenty of organizations to give to locally, with Giving Tuesday listing many of them on its website.

After the shopping extravaganza that was Black Friday, and its internet shopping counterpart Cyber Monday, Kelowna's mayor is urging the public to turn its attention in the opposite direction and think about giving.

In 2015, the average gift was over $107 and the total amount raised over the course of Giving Tuesday was roughly $1.77 million.

Giving Tuesday is now a global phenomenon that raised $177 million in online donations previous year.

Joined by representatives of several local community organizations, Basran and others said giving can take many forms.

"As Californians give back to our communities this holiday season, it's important to ensure the charities that support causes near and dear to our hearts are the real deal", Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement. In its debut, the movement triggered more than $10 million in online donations, a 53 percent jump over the same Tuesday a year earlier. "As we embark on our sixth year of GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partner's eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation".

The one-day charitable giving promotion launched in 2012 mostly fueled by the power of social media.

Hundreds of organizations and individuals participate in Giving Tuesday, either officially or unofficially.
