In what can only be termed as an extremely freaky case of official high-handedness, the donkeys were accused of destroying the plants outside the jail despite their owners reportedly being repeatedly warned to not let the animals wander.

In a weird development, the Uttar Pradesh police detained a herd of donkeys in Jalaun district of the state last week.

The animals were held after their owner, Kamlesh, let them loose despite being warned that a senior officer was planning to plant some expensive plants, RK Mishra, the head constable at Orai jail, had told ANI.

They had reportedly munched their way through 500,000 Indian ruppees (around £5,800) worth of plants left outside.

'Despite warnings the owner let loose his animals so we detained the donkeys'. He rushed to local BJP leader Shakti Gahoi for help.

First, a few UP cops decide to detain a herd of donkeys for destroying one of the state police stations' expensive plantations. "For two days, I could not find my horses and donkeys".

Sharma also said the animals were well known as mischief-makers in the area, the Times of India reports. The owners were located and they were told to "bail out" their animals only after filling a bond on the affidavit for committing the "crime" like any other criminal.

'We let go of the animals on Monday only after Kamlesh gave us a written affidavit that from now on he will not allow his animals to roam in residential areas or places of public importance'.
