South African pageant crowned the world's most handsome woman

A similar situation happened in 2014 when Jamaica's representative to the Miss Universe pageant, Kaci Fennell finished in 5th place. She had come up just short of the honour in 2014 and persevered despite chatter in some corners that she should give up. This is the largest Miss Universe in the pageant's history.

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is Miss Universe.

Ms. Nel-Peters became only the second South African to win the title after Margaret Gardiner won the title in 1978.

In the pageant's 66th year, almost 100 women from around the world-including first-timers from Cambodia, Laos and Nepal- took part.

Did you watch this year's Miss Universe pageant? At least Steve Harvey didn't make a mix up this time around. As the new Miss Universe, Nel-Peters will earn a year-long salary, an apartment in New York City during her reign and even more prizes. "And as a radio chemist, I advocate for so many children in S.T.E.M. and women in leadership positions and that's the mission of a Miss Universe". She then made it to the top 10 where she participated in the evening gown competition wearing a pale bluish-gray dress by designer Val Taguba.

Nel-Peters teaches self-defense courses for women inspired by her own experience.

The top three finalists.

Just goes to show you that pageants like this one - and all the women fighting for the crown - are about a lot more than swimsuits, ballgowns and stilettos. "She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for, and I think that is exactly who I am". And so Miss Universe competition will be the platform for me to use this foundation to spread awareness for all the deaf and mute around.

The women representing Thailand, Sri Lanka, Ghana and South Africa were chosen to move forward in the competition for the Africa and Asian Pacific region. This did very little, as more than half of undergraduate students take up to 6 years to graduate, leading us to age 24, and for a Ph.D or master's, the average graduating age is 33 (What is The Average Age of A Graduate Student, 2016).

This year's judges include YouTube star Lele Pons and former judge on "America's Next Top Model" Jay Manuel.
