Cambodia and Laos compete for the first time in Miss Universe pageant

A 22-year-old business management graduate from South Africa has bagged the top spot at Miss Universe 2017.

Newly crowned Miss Universe‚ Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters only had words of thanks for South Africans back home shortly after she won the crown in a star-studded ceremony in Las Vegas on Sunday night. This year's competition is the biggest in its 66-year history, with 92 contestants vying for the tiara, a New York City apartment and a year-long salary.

As she said made her final walk at the Axis Theater in Las Vegas, on Sunday, November 26 (Monday, November 27 in Manila), Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere looked every inch a beauty queen, wearing a red ombre gown by Filipino designer Michael Cinco. She is the second woman from her home country to earn the crown.

As of posting time, the candidates are in the Question and Answer portion of the competition.

Former Miss SA and Miss World‚ Rolene Strauss‚ congratulated her friend on the win.
