Longhorns host Texas Tech in regular-season finale

Kingsbury's Red Raiders (5-6, 2-6) need to beat the Longhorns tonight if they want to get to a bowl after missing the postseason a year ago. Tonight was a clear hit.

Texas Tech's win over Herman and the Longhorns caught the Longhorn faithful off guard. His touchdown was a 13-yarder from Nic Shimonek that pulled TTU within three at 23-20.

The Red Raiders finished 5-7 in 2016 and failed to qualify for a bowl game. If he'd been forced out after this season, Tech would have owed him $6.8 million. The Red Raiders scored 2 plays later on a 13 yard pass from Shimonek to Cameron Batson that was ultimately the game victor.

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury will be back in Lubbock next season, athletic director Kirby Hocutt told reporters after the Red Raiders' 27-23 win over Texas in Austin on Friday night.

Texas: The loss will make for a bitter off period before the bowl game. The score came after the Red Raiders' Justus Parker intercepted Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger and returned the pick 55 yards to the Texas 14.

Later in the 3rd quarter, Reggie Hemphill Mapps muffed a punt to give Texas Tech great field position again.

"You put all personal agendas and priorities behind yourself and worry about those guys and making sure they play one more game", Kingsbury said. "We just have to get over the hump".

Texas struck first, using machine-like precision to move 75 yards in just four plays to a 27-yard touchdown pass from Ehlinger to Armanti Foreman.

Ehlinger, who finished the day completing 27-of-47 passes for 239 yards, opened the drive with a pair of completions to senior wide receiver Lorenzo Joe and Humphrey for seven yards, then picked up the first down with a 5-yard run over the right end.

Texas rerook the lead on its ensuing possession with a 9-yard scoring run by Daniel Young. That set up Shimonek's touchdown pass to T.J. Vasher, which cut the Longhorn lead to 23-20 with 11 minutes, 29 seconds to go. The Longhorns missed the chance to earn a seventh win for the first time since 2013 and the chance to end the regular season on a three-game win streak.

The Longhorns extended their lead to 23-13 with a Rowland 40 yard field goal at the beginning of the 4th quarter.
