Doctor Who: Tom Baker Returns to Complete 1979 Episode

"That's why I can't say away from it, it was a lovely time of my life", he told the BBC. Adams would only write two other episodes for Doctor Who, but "Shada" was always the "what could've been?" after filming for the episode was interrupted by an engineering strike.

"Shada" was meant to be the final episode of Doctor Who's 17th season, follows the Doctor as he faces off against a devious alien scientist who is attempting to locate a hidden Time Lord prison planet named Shada.

Throughout all of Doctor Who's adventures, the Time Lord has regularly traveled through various timelines, with the series recently mirroring its fictional narrative as an episode from the late '70s finally being completed.

Jodie Whittaker will become the first woman to play the Time Lord in Doctor Who in the new series, alongside Bradley Walsh who will play her sidekick.

Baker was the fourth Doctor and his appearance is his first in the role in 36 years.

In 2017, the Beeb's commercial arm BBC Worldwide has reconstructed the original storyline from the footage and is filling in the gaps using animations, based on the original scripts and featuring the voices of the original actors - including Baker.

The 83-year-old actor has also filmed a non-animated scene, complete with the iconic striped scarf.

Well Tom Baker does seem like a nice old man these days, though he's a long way off 200.

"'Shada" was one of my favorite "Doctor Who' stories".

It's out on DVD and Blu-ray on 4th December. I have many fond memories of shooting the location scenes in Cambridge, and it was disappointing not to finish the story in the studio. "My real life was really rather drab". I think of myself as the happiest of all the Doctor Whos and they might not agree with that but then, let them disagree'.

The new version of Shada is out as a digital download today, from the usual places (including iTunes and Amazon).
