Antonio Conte Staying Uninvolved in Thibaut Courtois Contract Extension Talks

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has admitted that his side risk losing "maybe the best goalkeeper in the world" if they do not agree terms on a new contract with Thibaut Courtois.

"As you know very well if a big player decides to not sign a new contract it is very hard for the club to face this issue", Conte added.

"As you know very well if a big player decides to not sign a new contract it is hard for the club to face this issue but at the same time there is space to deal with this type of situation and to solve the situation but in this season". A few months of no progress later, we learned the Courtois was looking for something more like £200k, which would put him on par with the other best player at his position in the Premier League, David de Gea.

Courtois returned to Stamford Bridge in 2014 as one of the most highly-regarded goalkeepers in world football, quickly usurping Petr Cech as the Blues' no.1 option between the posts.

However, the former Genk youngster might be close to a departure from Chelsea once again.

"I'm happy because the whole team played well against Qarabag, not just me".

The 29-year-old has made just six starts in the Premier League this season, with the same amount coming from the substitutes' bench, and the lack of opportunity seems now to be weighing heavy on the speedy winger. For me the striker is very important to have a point of reference to do what I want is very important.

Chelsea are now nine points off the Premier League leaders Manchester City and a defeat in Liverpool might seriously harm the Blues' hopes of retaining their league title.

'There will be time enough towards the end of the season to have talks'.

"If Manchester City continues this way it will be very hard to arrive at the end of the season and fight for the title".
