Oscar Pistorius' jail term increased to 13 years

Back in 2014, Oscar Pistorious was sent to prison for six years for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

It came after prosecutors successfully argued that Pistorius' six-year term was too lenient.

Pistorius, a gold medal-winning athlete, is known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre prosthetics.

Pistorius has to serve at least half of his new sentence before he is considered for parole.

Pistorius killed Steenkamp by firing four shots through a locked toilet door on Valentine's Day in 2013.

"They have sent all their love to the Ings family because they feel that although justice was serviced for Jayde, they know the Ings family will still miss Jayde every day".

Prosecutors had called that six-year sentence "shockingly" lenient.

The ruling is likely the end of Pistorius' legal options.

Today, South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal sentenced Paralympic running world champion Oscar Pistorius to a total of 15 years in jail following the murder of his girlfriend.

The new sentence was backdated to start on the day he began his murder sentence, on July 6 a year ago. He has served a year and five months of his murder sentence.

Pistorius' lawyers have just one avenue open to them if they want to challenge the new sentence handed down by the Supreme Court, and that is to appeal to the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa.

"Leave to appeal should really not be granted", he said.

Oscar Pistorius reacts in the Pretoria High Court on September 11, 2014, in Pretoria, South Africa.

Friday's decision also has possible consequences for where he is held for the remainder of his sentence.

This is the third time Pistorius has faced a different sentence in the case.

Murders usually earn a minimum sentence of 15 years in South Africa, but the judge said Pistorius had been vulnerable on his stumps, and had tried to save Steenkamp's life after shooting her.
