New Infiniti QX50 revealed - and the ENGINE'S the star

The QX50 will make its public debut at this month's LA motor show, at which time more images and technical details will be released. The Japanese SUV, which sits on a new platform, has a 2,800 mm wheelbase, which is 73 mm shorter than the GLC's. Inside, Infiniti says the new SUV will have class-leading space, with 895 litres of cargo room with all the seats in place, 1,048 L with the rear seats slid forward and 1,699L with them folded. The 2.0 litre VC-Turbo is twenty years in the making (according to its maker) and combines the power of a sprinter and the efficiency of a long distance runner, so to speak.

This will be the second version of the premium mid-size crossover, which includes a world-first engine configuration that changes the compression ratio depending on which mode you want to be in. Full explanation and video illustration of how the new engine works here.

The new QX50 uses a CVT gearbox and is most efficient in front-wheel-drive form, although all-wheel-drive variants still offer a 30 percent improvement. Meanwhile, thanks to the fact that this new-generation XQ50 is a clean sheet design, built from the ground up on a new platform with new materials and a closer focus on performance; the resulting auto has a much greater torsional rigidity, meaning that it could also be on a par in terms of handling and driver involvement, too.

The new QX50 will come with Nissan's ProPILOT driver assistance technology, as seen on the latest Nissan Leaf.

As well as engine tech, the new vehicle gets safety tech including parent company Nissan's ProPilot system, which can autonomously control acceleration and braking in single lane highway situations as well as adjusting steering to ensure lane discipline. To reactivate the system, the driver just needs to touch the switch again or lightly press on the throttle.

Infiniti originally previewed the new generation QX50 as a concept at the 2017 Detroit auto show.
