Nagpur Test: Sri Lanka win toss, elect to bat first against India

India ended on 11-1 after Lokesh Rahul fell for seven, bowled by Sri Lankan paceman Lahiru Gamage - Murali Vijay (2no) and Cheteshwar Pujara (2no) were batting at the close with India trailing by 194 runs. The day belonged to India's bowlers however.

Three overs into the second session, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja dealt a big blow to the visitors, removing Angelo Mathews (10) cheaply.

Chandimal, who hit a six in his 122-ball knock, was given not out by the on-field umpire but captain Virat Kohli called for a review which went in India's favour. "Ashwin is an intelligent bowler with some subtle variations. He is going to be a handful on any wicket he is going to play", Sri Lanka coach Nic Pothas said.

Besides Chandimal, opener Dimukh Karunaratne (51 from 147; 6×4) and stumper Niroshan Dickwella (24 from 30; 4×4) were the only other batsmen who managed to provide some resistance to the Indian spin duo. But the Lankan batsmen seemed to go into the shell no sooner than Ishant sent back Sadeera Samarawickrama for 13, caught by Pujara at first slip.

Bowling tracks in India traditionally help spinners but in the opening drawn Test in Kolkata fast bowlers took centre stage.

Both the batsmen seemed determined to see off the lunch session but Thirimanne missed the line as the left-hander attempted to slog sweep off-spinner Ashwin only to see the ball rattle the stumps. "There was no help from the wicket and I was looking to bowl in right areas".

"Unfortunately we get only two days before we fly to South Africa after this series gets over". This wicket has done nothing. 'Can't commit to Ashwin, Jaddu abroad' Having made it clear India need to prepare differently for away tours, Kohli said there was no guarantee Ashwin and Jadeja would make the playing XI when the team tours overseas.

After drawing the first Test match in Kolkata at the Eden Gardens, a supremely confident India is set to make.

With South Africa series in mind, Jadeja was questioned on who will be the first choice between him and Ashwin to be included in the playing XI overseas. "If I am the captain, I will not even give the ball to anyone (laughs). And third one, Vijay obviously replaces Shikhar at the top", Kohli said at the toss. Then on a serious note, he said, "It all depends on team's balance and what it wants".

Amid the floundering Sri Lankan batting, Chandimal displayed good batting skills and admirable character, thwarting the home team's designs for a little over an hour and a half.
