Authorities are confirming a Texas DPS Trooper was shot and killed Thursday afternoon on I-45 in Freestone County near Fairfield.

Authorities in Texas say the man suspected of killing a state trooper during a traffic stop has been taken into custody.

Our DPS family is heartbroken tonight after one of Texas' finest law enforcement officers was killed in the line of duty.

The suspect was apprehended Thursday night near Prairie View, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Fairfield. Officials say Black is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A Waller County Sheriff K9 apparently helped capture the man wanted for shooting a Texas state trooper dead on Thanksgiving.

Allen, a 15-year veteran, had pulled over suspected shooter Dabrett Black, 32, for a traffic violation when moments later Black allegedly blasted multiple shots at Allen with a rifle, according to cops.

KYTX-TV reported in July that Black was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving and aggravated assault against a public servant following a police chase in Smith County. The trooper has not been identified.

Freestone County is about 90 minutes south of Dallas.

Following news of the trooper's death, Waller County Sherrif's Office said on Facebook that they were saddened by the death of a "brother".

Authorities are searching for Darbrett Black.
