Robinho protests his innocence amid prison reports

A Milan court on Thursday sentenced former AC Milan and Brazil forward Robinho aka Robson de Souza Santos to nine years in jail for gang raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan disco on January 22 2013.

The 33-year-old, who is now back playing football in Brazil, denied assaulting a 22-year-old woman at a Milan disco.

It was reported that Robinho has the right to two appeals in Italy and the sentence will not be enforced until that process has been completed, which could mean extradition proceedings being activated. The other four men had not been found by Italian police, ANSA said. Even if the former Milan player loses the appeal, he would still have to extradited to serve prison time in Italy.

"With regards to the news involving the forward Robinho, regarding something that happened some years ago, we would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the allegation, affirming that he was not involved in the incident", the statement read.

He is now back in Brazil with Atletico Mineiro.

Robinho, who also played for Real Madrid and Manchester City, has made 100 appearances for the Brazil national team and scored 28 goals.

Robinho moved to Europe amid much hype in 2005 when he joined Real Madrid from Santos.

Robinho had previously been accused of sexual assault while at City in 2009, but was later cleared.
