Jude Law in Talks to Join Brie Larson in 'Captain Marvel'

Variety reports that the English actor is now in negotiations to star opposite the Oscar-winning Larson as Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, in the upcoming solo movie for Larson's Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the time since then, Carol has taken on the mantle of the deceased Mar-Vell and became the true Captain Marvel, which is where she is expected to be in present-day MCU.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet wrote the most recent script with "Inside Out" scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman penning previous drafts, which follows Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. Carol Danvers doesn't exactly have a great track record with her relationships, with a good number of them ending up dead. Ben Mendelsohn had previously been mentioned as only in-talks to play the film's lead, but the Variety story seems to confirm that Mendelsohn is officially on board now. In the comics, Mar-Vell is a Kree who is sent to spy on Earth to decide if it's a threat to the Kree empire. A photo was recently revealed of him as Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and now this news.

It is unknown what Law's role in the film would be. The cast will also feature Samuel L. Jackson, once again returning as Nick Fury. Both of those films are set up at Warner Brothers. However, a subsequent update confirmed that Law will portray Mar-Vell, Marvel's original Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed Half Nelson.
