Kupwara encounter: One army jawan lost his life, three injured

As the security forces closed in on the hiding militants a gun battle started, in which the three Pakistani nationals were killed, a police officer told IANS.

The IGP said that in another operation against militants in Zirhama area of Kupwara an army soldier has been killed.

"The militant group of Lashkar-e-Toiba headed by Saifullah were moving towards LoC to receive a group of infiltrators as per our sources", they said.

The operation is still underway and the Indian Army is trying to gun down the terrorists. As per the police statistics, seventy-one security personnel have also laid down their lives while fighting the militants, so far, this year.

Kashmir, a Muslim-majority Himalayan region, is held by India and Pakistan in parts and claimed by both in full.

There was no independent confirmation of the two clashes, the latest in a string of deadly shootouts between Indian forces and rebels in restive Kashmir. More than 70,000 people have reportedly been killed in the conflict since 1989.
