Girl, 8, dies after suffering critical injuries in Perth drag race crash

Andra said in a statement: "Anita was undergoing a licensing pass at the Perth Motorplex, as part of the process for her to receive her racing licence, when this tragic accident happened".

The Junior Dragster class sanctioned by the Australian National Drag Racing Association allows competitors ages 8 to 16, meaning Board would have gotten her license at the youngest possible age for the association.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics and other medical staff, police confirmed on Sunday that Anita had passed away at hospital with her family at her bedside.

Speaking to the press, Anita's father Ian Broad described her as having "a bright, bubbly personality" with an "infectious" smile.

Anita Board died after losing control of her vehicle crashing into a concrete barrier during a solo test run at Perth Motorplex at the Goldenstates Junior Dragster event.

"Police would like to speak to anyone who was at the Motorplex who saw the crash, or has vision of the crash".

But Anita's dad said Monday it is his wish that children continue to "enjoy their racing". The Western Australian government has suspended drag racing in the state until a police investigation has been completed.

Mike Sprlyan, of Junior Dragster Australia, told news outlet Perth Now that beginners aged between eight and 17 reached top speeds of about 40-50km/h (25-30mph). "We chose drag racing because we believed it was the safest form of motor sport", Board said. "I think that would strike anyone as an extraordinary speed for an eight-year-old to be doing", he concluded. She was participating in the Goldestates Junior Dragster event before the accident.

"We do understand there needs to be a couple of changes but we don't believe there needs to be major change".

Anita's father Ian posted, "Our angel setting off on what was meant to be a day to remember ... my heart is in a million pieces".
