An official said, the boat was making a trip from Punnami Ghat, Bhavanipuram, to Pavitra Sangamam, Ferry village.

While six picnickers died after falling into the Ganga river in Vaishali, three women drowned in the Baghmati River when a boat capsized in Samastipur district, the officials had said. He announced Rs 8 lakh compensation each to the families of the deceased. Swimmers and local fishermen rescued 15 passengers as the boat capsized.

Addressing the media, the police said that rescue operations were on by the Vijayawada City Police and the National Disaster Rescue Force. Efforts were on to find the remaining seven passengers, the police said, adding that none of the passengers was wearing life jacket. Some of the survivors complained that the police that the boat was shaking right from moment it started from Bhavani Island.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa, Opposition leader Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, state BJP president K Hari Babu and others expressed grief over the incident.
