Star Wars universe to expand with new trilogy of films

Lucasfilm and Disney must really like what Rian Johnson has been doing with Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

After that, Lucasfilm shifts focus to an entirely new trilogy, confirmed earlier this week, with Johnson back at the helm.

That's high praise indeed when you consider Kennedy has butted heads with other directors who have contributed to Star Wars in recent years.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was full of praise for Johnson, saying, "Rian will do incredible things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy". Here are five reasons why Disney's new service has us as excited as a kid in line for Space Mountain.

The announcement, made by Disney chief Bob Iger on a call with investment analysts, constituted the most ambitious new foray into the "Star Wars" galaxy, moving well beyond the original nine-film framework imagined by Lucas.

Disney also announced that a live-action "Star Wars" TV series will air on one of its entertainment streaming services, which is set to go live by the end of 2019.

"He's a creative force, and watching him craft "The Last Jedi" from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career", Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy said of Johnson.

Disney said no release dates have been set for the new trilogy.

This time though, it seems we're really getting something new, as the trilogy will 'introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored'.

The franchise has already begun branching out away from the Skywalker family with their anthology films, subtitled A Star Wars Story.

The Last Jedi, which follows on from 2015's hit film The Force Awakens and is expected to focus on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), will be in theatres on December 15.
