David Luiz 'being punished because of Diego Costa friendship'

Chelsea's 1-0 win at home to Manchester United sees Antonio Conte's men sit one point behind the Red Devils.

Conspicuous by his absence from the entire Chelsea lineup was defensive mainstay Luiz though, and Conte warns that the Brazilian's recent efforts have not been up to the required standard to maintain a starting XI spot.

Luiz's replacement, Denmark worldwide Andreas Christensen, impressed in the centre of defence, with Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku struggling to get the better of him.

Conte had also earlier been asked about whether David Luiz had a future at the club, and appeared to state that would only be the case if he worked, but later clarified this and stated that he didn't intend to cast doubt on the Brazilian's future.

"It is a tactical decision", the manager told Sky Sports.

Conte will not attempt to placate Abramovich, he will simply make the decisions he feels are best for the club and stand by them - whether they are judged good or bad.

"If I see that you are not in good form, it's normal".

"I have to put my face in every situation and then to sometimes make important decisions".

The Brazil defender was banished to the stands on Sunday, after questioning Conte's tactics in a team meeting after the 3-0 loss to Roma on Tuesday.

"[It was] only a tactical decision, I repeat, only a tactical decision", he told reporters after the match.

"I decided this way tonight, maybe I can decide a different way in the future or I can continue the same way". "I was very happy for this", Conte said in the press conference following the win over United.

"Sometimes I can make mistakes".

"No. [checks]. I think that I have a squad". This mindset has yielded spectacular results when selling players - most notably Ramires, David Luiz and Oscar - but led to more problems when buying.
