Manafort, associate to remain under house arrest, tracked by Global Positioning System

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on Saturday offered up his Trump Tower apartment in New York City and other properties as a guarantee he will not flee the country as part of a court filing in which his lawyers asked he be granted more freedom to travel between his homes and businesses.

They were released into home confinement with Global Positioning System monitoring on $10 million and $5 million unsecured bail bonds last week and are now petitioning the court for more flexible conditions.

That means the men remain at least for now on home confinement, a condition imposed last week following their indictment.

"We're not talking about dangerousness here; we are only talking about flight [risk]", Berman Jackson said, indicating she doesn't believe either defendant poses a danger to the public.

Manafort and Gates surrendered last week to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to face criminal charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller and his team of prosecutors, who are investigating potential coordination between Trump campaign aides and Russian Federation.

The indictment charges Manafort and Gates with conspiracy to defraud the US, money laundering and violations of lobbying laws in connection with Manafort's lobbying work for pro-Russian party in Ukraine. They have pleaded not guilty and were placed on home confinement with Global Positioning System monitoring.

The judge also has considered issuing a gag order in the case, but that topic was not addressed at Monday's hearing.

Manafort agreed to pay $10 million if he failed to appear in court, and Gates agreed to pay $5 million - but Jackson found little assurance in their promises.

Prosecutors have described Manafort and Gates as potential flight risks given the seriousness of the charges against them, their personal wealth and the possibility of yearslong prison sentences. He promised to limit his travel to Washington, D.C., Florida, New York and Virginia and to not apply for any travel documents. And Manafort ended up with three passports because he had two - with one he sent away for foreign visa applications - then lost the first and applied for a third, the lawyer said.
