Conte: Dropping Luiz Was Tactical

Maverick Brazilian Luiz was dropped for Sunday's 1-0 home win over Manchester United. We have to be patient with the team and defend in the right way.

Luiz's replacement, Denmark worldwide Andreas Christensen, impressed in the centre of defence, with Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku struggling to get the better of him.

Then, in an interview with Sky Sports, the Italian said he didn't know whether David Luiz even still had a future at the bridge, but then later walked back that idea in his post-match news conference.

"It's very simple. The coach has to make the best decision for the team".

Antonio Conte has consistently claimed he is "different" to his Chelsea predecessors as questions have been raised over his future during recent weeks, but, until Sunday, it was hard to pinpoint exactly what he meant.

"Yesterday was one of effervescence, they had life, and I thought Chelsea deserved to win". Sometimes I can make mistakes.

"It's normal, this can happen to everyone of my players". I have to put my face in every situation, and sometimes make important decisions. I was very happy for this.

"I think that I have a squad". He's a great player so it's normal for me [that he's done so well at United]. I have to make the best decision for the team. "I try to do this".

Though it remains to be seen how the incident impacts on Luiz's future opportunities, the likes of Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic have seen confrontations with Conte lead to their eventual departures. The Blues boss only responded with: "It can change".

Given his record of ruthlessly disposing of managers perceived to be underachieving, the sight of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich at the club's training ground this week might have given Antonio Conte cause for concern.
