StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Goes Free-To-Play This Month

Starcraft 2, one of the major games behind the current esports renaissance, will go free to play after more than half a decade on the market, Blizzard announced at BlizzCon earlier today. If you already own Wings of Liberty, the second installment Heart of the Swarm will be available for free.

If you've been a big StarCraft II fan for a while and have dutifully purchased the three expansions (or even just one), you'll be granted a free Ghost skin as well as three new portraits - something as a way for Blizzard to say thanks. The Co-op Commanders Raynor, Kerrigan, andArtanis will remain completely free, meaning that you can keep leveling them to your heart's content.

He added that taking away some of the barriers - primarily cost - will hopefully give a larger audience the chance to play StarCraft 2. Of course, we'd have to ridicule you for having such thoughts, because this is Blizzard we're talking about, and its games have some true staying power.

From November 14, the Wings of Liberty story campaign will be absolutely free to play. And for players who own all three? Anybody out there still holding out on StarCraft II? In the seven years since it released in 2010, StarCraft II has awarded over $11M in prizes to competitors.

Included in the free package is access to the Wings of Liberty campaign, ranked ladder multiplayer, and all Co-Op Commanders. Additionally, players will be able to unlock access to StarCraft 2's multiplayer content for free. As with the existing line-up of Co-op Commanders, however, you will be able to play upcoming new Co-op Commanders who are released for free until they reach level 5. Company CEO Mike Morhaime revealed the news during BlizzCon 2017's opening ceremony. This also includes all units from the expansion campaigns. However, the latter needs to be unlocked first by completing the "First Wins of the Day" achievement 10 times either against the computer or in unranked games.
