Uber bans right-wing activist after racist rant about Muslim drivers

Uber banned Laura Loomer from its platform after she complained about Muslim Uber drivers on Twitter.

Hadid's tweet was shared more than 13,000 times and liked almost 50,000 times by her supporters. She continued posting a number of anti-Muslim tweets to her more than 100,000 followers.

Laura Loomer, whose bio describes her as a "citizen journalist" who previously worked for Canada's Rebel Media and undercover watchdog group Project Veritas, tweeted a photo of two women wearing hijabs on Manhattan's Greenwich Street, near where 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov drove a pick-up truck down a bike path Tuesday, killing at least eight people and injuring 12 others.

Authorities on Thursday charged Uzbekistan-born U.S. immigrant Sayfullo Saipov with providing material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organisation - Islamic State - and violence and destruction of motor vehicles.

At the time, Uber's Regional General Manager Meghan Verena Joyce wrote an e-mail to the Uber driver community condemning the actions of neo-Nazis at the violent demonstrations, saying that the company will back them up if they have to end their ride for whatever reason. "It's extremely unfortunate and this is a conversation we need to have for our safety".

Her comments came after reports revealed that the NY attack was reportedly carried out by a former Uber driver.

Scott Coriell, a spokesman for Lyft, said Ms Loomer's account had been deactivated.

Uber has since banned the outspoken activist from the app, according to Business Insider.

This isn't the first time Uber has banned users for controversial race-related comments and incidents.

Uber banned a woman Wednesday from the ride hailing app after she tweeted about her inability to find a auto not driven by a "non Muslim".

Following the deadly protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, both Uber and Lyft vowed to take a strict stance on users who were discriminatory, racist or hateful. Uber said it is cooperating with investigators.

Those guidelines state a "zero tolerance policy toward discrimination of any kind", including toward drivers based religion.
