Burberry's Christopher Bailey to leave at end of 2018

Bailey was credited with helping transform Burberry from a small United Kingdom company into a global fashion brand, building up its digital presence by streaming its fashion shows live and redesigning its flagship stores.

After 17 years at the helm, the British designer is parting ways with the London-based label at the end of 2018.

Burberry's president and chief creative officer, Christopher Bailey, is leaving the company after 17 years. He is surrendering various share awards given as part of the company's incentive plans, which are worth £16m at current prices. Angela Ahrendts in 2014 until this summer, Bailey acted as both chief executive and chief creative officer, inaugurating an era where the talented folks behind your favorite clothes are required to be as well-versed with spreadsheets as they are with the best way to cut a double-breasted topcoat.

Christopher Bailey is credited with turning around Burberry's fortunes, with catwalk shows streamed live and refurbishing its flagship stores, like this branch in Shanghai.

Appointed creative director in 2004 and chief creative officer in 2009, Mr. Bailey positioned Burberry as a conduit of Britishness to the world, working with actors, musicians and artists to push the brand beyond its home market.

"Burberry has undergone an incredible transformation since 2001 and Christopher has been instrumental to the company's success in that period", Marco Gobbetti, the company's chief executive, said in a statement. Gobbetti has been with Burberry since January although he only formally took over as chief executive in July.

Gobbetti said the search for a successor to Bailey was underway and that he respected his decision to move on. "The legacy he leaves and the exceptional talent we have at Burberry give me enormous confidence in our future".
