Indira Gandhi had keen interest in music: Lata Mangeshkar

Gandhi was the first female Prime Minister of India and the daughter of the first Prime Minister late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Indira Gandhi, she said, led India through major transformations and in her 16-year long battle against poverty and social injustice, she gave her all to make the country self-reliant in agriculture, industry and technology.

Carnatic vocalist TM Krishna Tuesday received the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.

The head granthi of the Golden Temple, Giani Jagtar Singh, today called upon various Sikh organisations "not to allow" the Congress to install a statue of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in Punjab.

"In today's time when the country finds itself increasingly divided in the name of narrow nationalism, the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration is the recognition of the values she stood for", Rahul said. "She paid for her principles with her life, but never compromised with her faith in India and her people".

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who should have presented the award, was absent citing ill health.

"The entire Sikh community is in a state of anguish and grief that the Congress leaders who indulged in these massacres are yet to be punished", he said in a statement.

"It was Indira Gandhi's firm belief that without social harmony and understanding of each other among India's diverse people, it was not possible for our country to grow and prosper", Dr. Singh said.

Congratulating T. M Krishna, Singh said: "He is an extraordinary gifted musician".
