WTA Finals: Caroline Wozniacki pips Venus Williams for the title

Caroline Wozniacki had set out her marker from the start of the tournament.

She had been beaten by Venus in seven previous matches.

"I knew she was stepping it up, she had nothing to lose at that point and she really went for it. Things were going in for her".

Another three setter was in her future though, as she fought with the high-flying Caroline Garcia to end the bubbly Frenchwoman's challenge and so set up a clash with her little sister's best friend on the tour.

But Wozniacki was dominant from the get-go and never looked back after breaking Williams to lead 3-1. A second service break in the eighth game allowed Wozniacki to serve for the set only for Williams to break back right away.

But with the title in her sights, Wozniacki was unable to serve it out in the seventh game and the ninth, when Williams produced an astounding crosscourt victor to win her fourth straight game.

Halep, who failed to make it out of the round-robin phase in a Singapore tournament won by Caroline Wozniacki on Sunday, said she was relaxed now but expected the burden of the ranking to rise when the next campaign begins.

But Wozniacki finally triumphed in the 10th game with her backhand victor to celebrate in style.

Wozniacki had seized the momentum and with her variation, depth of shot and complete lack of errors preventing Williams from grabbing any sort of foothold in the contest, the flying Dane raced into a 5-0 lead in 11 second-set minutes.

But not this time - Wozniacki held off a fast-charging Williams to win 6-4 6-4 and take the most important title of her career.

"I kind of felt like it was a little bit of an uphill battle, to be honest".

"Eight is my lucky number so I was hoping if I was going to beat her at least once in my career it would be today", Wozniacki said.

"I had many ups and downs but I was consistent, in my opinion", she added.

"I have to work harder to stay there but in my mind now is just to enjoy the moment and we will see". And obviously the crowd was starting to get into it and rooting her on obviously because they wanted a longer match.
