Policeman killed, militants escape during stone pelting

A gunfight is underway between militants and the state government forces in Mir Mohalla in Hajin area of district Bandipora. Zaheer Abbas Khan, a member of the Special Operations Group (SOG), lived in Poonch district.

Earlier on October 12, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba militant, Waseem Shah, believed to be the main architect of unrest past year in south Kashmir, was killed along with his accomplice in an encounter. "An SOG man of Jammu and Kashmir Police was killed in the initial fire", he said.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the troops killed the youth during a siege and search operation at Mir Mohallah in Hajin area of the district, media reports said. As the forces were conducting searches, the militants opened fire triggering a gun battle, the official said.Constable Zahir Abbas of the J&K police was killed while an Army soldier sustained minor injuries in the gun-battle, he said.

The police official said that one of the slain terrorist has been identified as Ali Bhai, a LeT terrorist from Pakistan.

Heavy stone pelting is being reported from the area following the gun battle.

On October 16, in a crackdown on terror module, the Security forces arrested two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and on Hizbul Mujahideen militant in Jammu and Kashmir.
