Sensex ends strong at 33228.32 pts

The Sensex resumed higher at 33,228.32 and surged to an intra-day record of 33,286.51.

The government yesterday announced various measures to spur the economy, including a Rs 2.11 lakh crore recapitalisation plan for PSU banks and a massive Rs 6.92 lakh crore road building programme.

The Sensex had touched an intra-day low of 33,164.42 points-mark.

The sectoral indices like Materials, Consumer Durable, FMCG and Industrials rallied in opening trade.

Japan's Nikkei gained 0.6 percent while South Korea's Kospi rose 0.2 percent and Australian shares rose 0.2 percent.

Market observers pointed out that nearly all the major PSBs like SBI, PNB and BoB rose in the band of 20-40 per cent. We look at key developments affecting the market today.

In terms of investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought scrip worth Rs 3,582.50 crore, whereas domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold stocks worth Rs 155.71 crore.

Earlier, the rupee opened lower by 20 paise at 65.02 per dollar as against yesterday's closing level of 64.82 per dollar at the Interbank Forex Market (FOREX).

On the other hand, the S&P BSE banking index receded by 233.70 points and oil and gas index declined by 191.25 points while the telecom index inched-down by 84.14 points.

Major gainers were, Adaniports 4.59 pct, Kotak Bank 2.05 pct, SunPharma 1.80 pct, TataMtrDvr 1.78 pct, ITC 1.68, Bajaj Auto 1.54 pct, Maruti 1.50 pct and HeroMotoCo 1.35 pct.
