In the accident, Rodrigues' knee reportedly hit Choirul's chest when they both tried to stop the ball from going into the goal.

According to reports, the 38-year old goalkeeper collapsed towards the end of the opening 45 minutes after colliding with team-mate Ramon Rodrigues and Pedang forward Marcel Sacramento.

Paramedics had rushed to his side to give him oxygen while he was stretchered off the field.

Indonesian newsportal Kompas reported that following the collision, Huda appeared to move normally while holding his jaw before his condition deteriorated.

Persela said thousands of fans later attended a candlelit vigil to honour the goalkeeper, who made more than 500 league appearances for his only club.

The cause of death was head and neck trauma, said Dr. Zaki Mubarok, of the Dr. Soegiri Lamongan General Hospital.

Video footage showed Huda clutching his chest in pain before he was rushed away on a stretcher and was taken to the Lamongan hospital.

A statement posted on the club website quoting Dr Yudistiro Andri Nugroho, from the same hospital, said Huda suffered a traumatic collision which stopped his breathing and heart.

Huda had been playing for Persela since 1999 - the only club he ever played for in professional Indonesian football.

Persela tweeted a tribute to Huda after he died, calling him "the real legend of Persela".
