Girl, 3, accidentally drowns in grease trap outside ice cream shop

Auburn, Ala. - A 3-year-old girl drowned Saturday after falling into a grease trap behind an ice cream shop in Auburn, Alabama.

The death is being ruled an accident.

Surveillance camera video showed the girl playing behind the ice cream shop with two of her siblings when she sunk through a lid covering the deep grease pit.

Police received a call after Sadie Andrews went missing on Saturday afternoon but when they arrived an employee was desperately performing CPR on the unconscious toddler. She was taken to East Alabama Medical Center and efforts to revive her were unsuccessful, police said.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris reportedly said Sadie stepped onto the lid of the grease trap, which apparently wasn't locked or secured, and fell in.

WTVM reports that video evidence showed the girl was playing with her siblings when she fell through the lid.

She was initially reported as a missing person, and family searched the area frantically before finding her body in the grease trap.

Harris said Sunday night that no foul play was suspected.

Her mom, Corrie, said: 'Her name means God's thoughtful princess, and she really was that - always expressing gratefulness and love for God and other people.

"Our deepest condolences go to the family of the child who tragically died Saturday", shop owners Lance and Kara Latham wrote.

'They are acquaintances of ours and have been regular customers.

The statement continued: "The entire Bruster's family is horribly saddened by this tragic accident".

Sadie's mother, Corrie Andrews, said the girl would "light up a room with her smile".

A YouCaring page was set up for the family with a goal of raising $10,000.
