ABIDJAN, Cote d'Ivoire - A cargo plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near the worldwide airport in Abidjan, killing four crew members and injuring six others, an Ivory Coast official said Saturday.

Hundreds of residents of the heavily populated neighborhood of Port Bouet, which surrounds the airport, crowded around the crash site.

He says the plane was carrying French military cargo.

Witnesses say a cargo plane has crashed into the Atlantic Ocean just after taking off from Ivory Coast's worldwide airport in Abidjan.

"This was a plane chartered by the French army in the framework of the Barkhane force in order to carry out logistical missions", French army spokesman Colonel Patrick Steiger said. The plane wreckages were seen scattered in the shallow waters.
