Chief: Officer fatally shot during struggle

A New Orleans police officer was ambushed and fatally shot on Friday, when his patrol team stepped out of their auto to investigate something suspicious shortly after midnight.

At least one - possibly two - officers returned fire "and our officer collapsed right there on the scene", Harrison said.

The warrant cites video showing McNeil was in a blue tactical uniform identifying him as a police officer when he encountered Bridges, who was carrying a backpack investigators said they later learned contained illegal drugs. He was later taken to University Medical Center, where the medical staff pronounced him dead.

New Orleans Police Department Officer Marcus McNeil, fatally shot on duty. At around 12:15 a.m. Friday morning, the officers came upon some suspicious activity and exited their vehicles.

"There was a peaceful surrender after long negotiations", Harrison said. "From all indications, he loved doing his job, loved the New Orleans Police Department and loved working in east New Orleans". Darren Bridges, 30, was arrested in connection to his death.

Police have only said McNeil and three other officers made an "observation" before the shooting happened.

The name of the officer has not been released at this time at the request of the family. "They saw something that aroused their suspicion".

New Orleans police say the officer shot and killed while on patrol early Friday was 29 years old and leaves a wife and two children, aged 5 and 2.

An NOPD officer confirmed McNeil's identity this morning, hours after the Seventh District officer was shot multiple times by a suspect outside an apartment complex on Cindy Place.

"We are all grieving", Harrison told reporters.

The document then said several gunshots were fired, and McNeil could be heard screaming, according to the newspaper.

Police Chief Michael Harrison and Mayor Mitch Landrieu said during a press conference that the suspect was allegedly wounded by one officer and was later arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police believe there was only one suspect involved.
