Sylvester Stallone says he's directing Creed 2

Stallone announced the Creed news with an understated Instagram post, sharing an old photo of himself and Jordan.

Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan are both expected to return for the sequel, as well as Dolph Lundgren as Drago.

In addition to being a box office success, "Creed" also gave Stallone an incredible acting opportunity, as he went into the 2015 Academy Awards the favorite to win the Best Support Actor award, which went to Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies").

On Monday, Stallone posted a still of himself and Jordan posing together on his Instagram account with the caption "Looking forward to directing and Producing The incredibly talented Michael B Jordan in CREED 2 next year ..."

If Stallone does indeed take over for Creed director and frequent Jordan collaborator Ryan Coogler, the move would put the franchise's power back in the hands of its original architect.

While Stallone only acted in Creed, he had written every other Rocky movie until then, and directed four of the films. It also garnered Stallone his first Oscar nod since 1976, when he was nominated for Best Actor and Best Screenplay for his roles on Rocky.

Creed earned $173.6 million worldwide.

The potential involvement of Coogler in Creed 2 had been up in the air, as he was hired by Marvel Studios to direct and co-write Black Panther, and will presumably return for a sequel.
