UGC panel suggests changing AMU, BHU names; govt says no such plan

Commenting that a shop's signboard can not change the product it sells, Singh said the UGC, instead of doing major works like starting new courses and other facilities, is changing names.

The suggestion was made by one of the five committees set up by UGC to conduct an "academic, research, financial and infrastructure audit" of 10 centrally funded universities.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have been suggested to drop the words "Muslim" and "Hindu", respectively, from the names. "The committee studied various aspects and I have not seen what they have said, but there is neither such decision nor is there any such intention to change the names", the HRD minister said as reported by India Today.

Earlier, there were reports that a UGC committee has suggested changes in BHU and AMU's names to reflect their secular characters. We don't want to revisit the violence that once rocked BHU when a name change was proposed a half-century ago. Replying to queries on an audit report that supposedly suggested the dropping of the words, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said in Ahmedabad on Monday, "No such decision is being taken, and neither does the government have any such intention". The report, however, refrained from commenting on the institutions' minority status as the matter is sub-judice, reported Indian Express.

The panel also questioned why the majority of faculty appointments are of its former students.

The AMU auditing committee also branded the university as "feudal".

The UGC panel was formed to probe the alleged irregularities in 10 central universities.

Some other universities that are being audited by the panel are the prestigious Allahabad University, Central University of Jharkhand, Central University of Rajasthan, Central University of Jammu, Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya in Wardha, University of Tripura and Pondicherry University.
