Halloween costumes can carry head lice

Scratching your head trying to find the flawless Halloween costume?

Ah, Halloween. A time to trade the very real horrors of the world for infinitely more fun fake horrors, like a ghoulish pumpkin display or head lice waiting in store-bought costumes!

Parents are being warned about the dangers of lice, as they search for the flawless Halloween costume for their kids. While many blame the start of a new school year, the biggest culprit is actually Halloween costume shopping.

"We have a lot of people going into stores right now, trying on masks, trying on costumes and trying on wigs", Sexton told Toledo station WTOL-TV. But think about how many people tried them on before you?

Experts recomment putting a costume or wig in a sealed plastic bag for 48 hours before wearing it to kill lice.

You can also put dryer-friendly items in the dryer on high for 45 minutes before wearing them to kill any bugs or lice.

Or wear a swim cap or wig cap when trying masks and other items on.

Halloween is usually filled with creepy crawlers, but health experts are warning that there may be real ones lurking inside your costume's mask this year.

And although lice are just a nuisance and not diseased, why give yourself extra trouble when you can easily avoid it all.

In extreme cases, some prescription treatments may be needed to eradicate the lice from your child.
