India National Park: White Tigers Kill Keeper

A few days into his new job at the Bannerghatta Biological Park near Bengaluru, an animal keeper was killed by two white tiger cubs.

Anjaneya alias Anjini, 40, a gatekeeper who was mauled to death by two white tiger cubs at the safari enclosure at Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), did not realize tigers were in the cage when he walked in.

The Times of India reports that one of the tigers pounced on him, sinking its teeth into his neck.

The incident happened on Saturday at around 7 pm when Anji went into the enclosure to feed the tigers and check if they had returned from the safari area.

Another cub then joined in the attack.

The tigers were eventually driven off by other park staff, but their victim was already dead. "He succumbed to the injuries", the official said.

According to an official, the tigers attacked the man because one of the four enclosure gates was not properly latched. "The felines did not allow the caretaker to retrieve Anji's body from the spot..."

Anji, who was married with two children, was previously working as a security guard and had no experience in handling animals.

The incident happened October 7 at Bannerghatta Biological Park.

His bereft family turned to protest on Sunday, rallying outside the park and demanding almost £6,000 compensation from the zoo.
