Seahawks survive Rams, take NFC West lead heading into bye week

It was prove-it day at the L.A. Coliseum.

The Los Angeles Rams (3-1) are coming from a 35-30 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4. For whatever reason, they've also had plenty of success versus the Seahawks in recent years, covering the spread in seven of the last 10 meetings and five straight at home versus Seattle.

Spinning the scoreboard hasn't been the problem this season and how stout Seattle's defense can be will likely determine this NFC West showdown.

The story: The Rams' Todd Gurley II was rumbling toward the end zone when Seattle's Earl Thomas executed a ideal chop on the ball. That's the only time Gurley touched the ball inside the 20-yard line. The ball, however, was already loose and hit the pylon for a touchback. "Until you go back and truly look at it, I can't say and I haven't had a chance to specifically talk to Sammy about that one individual play".

Cal (+27) at Washington: I admit to now holding a grudge against the Golden Bears since they fell as my Smokin' Lock of the Week last Saturday in Eugene.

He Said It: "Obviously a very disappointing start to this ball game".

Both Rams scores followed interceptions.

The answer: December 28, 2014, in Week 17 of the 2014 season. More than the standings though, it could be a psychological mountain to climb, considering how Seattle has dominated this division since the beginning of the decade.

A quarter of the way through the regular season and you might be asking "are the Rams for real?"

"Whenever you get five turnovers", Seattle coach Pete Carroll said, "you're supposed to win the game". Having a good start to the season is one thing, but staying consistent is another story. At the time, he even tweeted he might call it quits. Aaron Donald is one of the best defensive players in the National Football League, and has the potential to dominate the atrocious Seahawks offensive line. Defensively, the Rams are yielding 26.2 points and 367.8 total yards (216.2 in passing and 151.5 in rushing) per game.

The Rams next possession ended when Goff was sacked by Frank Clark, who forced a fumble. Todd Gurley isn't going to set yards-from-scrimmage records. His scramble runs and passes could be the decisive advantage Seattle didn't have the last time it was here.

Graham lined up wide left on the L.A. 4-yard line and had single coverage.

"We didn't get it done, they did, and we make no excuses", McVay said.

In the second quarter, Los Angeles managed to jump out to a 10-0 lead before Seattle tied it up before halftime, which unfortunately would end up being the only points scored by Jared Goff and company for the rest of the game.

Most troubling, against Seattle, might have been a play when Watkins appeared to stop running his route and a Goff pass sailed over his head. "I don't know him, but I think it's incredibly exciting that a young guy like that could jump in and show that he has command and do a great job right off the bat".

The Seahawks have notoriously been slow starters during the Russell Wilson era. Gurley's 596 yards rushing/receiving are second-highest total in National Football League, and most by Ram in first four games since Marshall Faulk had 615 in 2001. The biggest surprise comes though, in their first ranked scoring offense.

Aaron Rodgers threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams with 11 seconds remaining, lifting Green Bay over Dallas in another thriller nine months after the Packers' divisional playoff win on the same field.
