Apple gave Uber unprecedented access to your iPhone

He said: "So I checked our dataset to find out if any other app was granted a sensitive entitlement by Apple".

But there are certain entitlements that are only used by Apple, giving the company's own software tight integration with the iPhone. Apple had given that code, called an "entitlement", to Uber to improve the functionality between the app and the Apple Watch, according to an Uber spokesperson on Thursday.

But the scarier problem is the potential for Uber's permissions to be used by hackers.

Uber isn't doing this illicitly: Apple granted the app the permission. Apple only gave developers about four months to create apps before the Apple Watch started to ship in 2015, and Uber may have been hard pressed to have the app ready before the launch.

"By carefully enabling only the resource access that you need, you minimize the potential for damage if malicious code successfully exploits your app", Apple's official explanation of entitlements reads.

Many screen-recording apps use this entitlement without permission, such as iRec, which run on jailbroken devices. Access to the screen-recording feature, however, is not available to all developers. "This API would allow maps to render on your phone in the background and then be sent to your Apple Watch", they added.

Uber says the tool is no longer in use and will be removed from the app in a subsequent update. That's why Apple doesn't allow just any company to use private entitlements.

Co-founder/CEO of Uber, Travis Kalanick, speaks onstage during "The Übermensch" at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit.

The Uber app was a feature in which without notice to the user to read from the iPhone screen.

Uber has previously been caught violating the rules of the App Store, and it has a history of pushing boundaries when it comes to building software thatmay break laws or be unethical. Apple is yet to responded to the report. The entitlement isn't common and would require Apple's explicit permission to use, the researchers explained.

Apple became an Uber investor through its investment in Chinese ride-hailing company Didi Chuxing.

It is the latest controversy to blight Uber, coming as the company's new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi visits London in an attempt to overturn an upcoming city-wide ban on the app. Uber's current CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, has not yet said anything publicly about the $69 billion startup's relationship with Apple, but has addressed the company's rule-bending culture.
