British Masters victor leads Alfred Dunhill after 1st round

That run will come to an end if he does not take victory over St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie this week, after a season that has seen him plagued by a rib injury he sustained last winter. Fleetwood's round of 63 set a new Carnoustie record, per the Press Association. "Most of the times, those are your best rounds when you don't quite realize what you're doing".

Defending champion Tyrrell Hatton reunited with actor Jamie Dornan after the pair teamed up a year ago when the Englishman won his first European Tour title.

It was one of those days for McIlroy jnr at the Alfred Dunhill Links. He finished second to former Augusta State player Oliver Wilson in 2014.

Dunne is aiming to win his second straight professional tournament, following his success in the British Masters last week. I'd love to win this tournament.

As he acknowledged, it's not easy to make it your day if you start slowly and then are waiting around before playing every shot.

Dunne could even leap into the top five of the Order of Merit, above Rory McIlroy. Garcia is not in this week's field, so Fleetwood has a chance to pull further away from the Spaniard to finish the season No. 1.

Hatton also has recent history in this event: he's the defending champion.

"Happy with today's round", Hatton said. "It is a little easier when you get off to a good start".

"It's a odd feeling to think I've won the tournament, because when I look back, it doesn't feel like it was me that won". I've always seemed to play well here probably because of sort of the relaxed atmosphere that there is.

"It was a situation I wasn't used to at the time and might have overwhelmed me a bit", he recalled of tying for the 54-hole lead in that event before closing with a 78 as American Zach Johnson claimed the Claret Jug.

'There's obviously a lot of good memories but there's a bit of what might have been in there as well, ' said the eloquent Irishman.

'My iron play was really solid, ' Dunne said.
